Fight Ageing with Antioxidants
Antioxidants
are vitamins, minerals and enzymes that protect the body by neutralizing free
radicals –the chemical molecules that can harm your health and accelerate
ageing. Research has shown that certain foods contain antioxidants, which help
the body defend itself against free radicals. Antioxidants also help your body
ward off diseases, strengthen the immune system and help you keep looking
younger.
Antioxidants
are betacarotene, vitamin C and vitamin E, plus the mineral selenium can easily
be increased in your diet by increasing the consumption of fruits, nuts and
vegetables. Asparagus, cantaloupe, carrots, dried apricots, green beans, peaches,
spinach, sweet potatoes and tomato juice are abundant in beta- carotene.
Vitamin
C is found in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, grape fruit juice, green
peppers, orange juice, oranges and papaya. Almonds hazelnuts, wheat germ and
oil, sunflower seeds and oil are fall of vitamin E. Selenium is found in
broccoli, cabbage, onions, seafood and wholegrain cereals and breads. Keep in
mind that the fresher the food and lower the heat to which it is exposed, the
higher its nutrient content.
While
the use of antioxidants to slow down or prevent the ageing process makes sense studies
have yet to conclusively validate it. Taking large doses of some antioxidants,
such as vitamin E may actually be harmful. A doctor`s proper supplementary dose
of antioxidants, if at all, to lower the risk of side effects.
